Dr. Jeremy Benson
Hailed by the New York Times as "Powerful and Passionate", Dr. Jeremy Benson, American flutist and pedagogue, joined the faculty at the David L. Walters Department of Music in the fall of 2011, where he is Associate Professor of Flute Studies, conducts the Jacksonville Opera Theatre Orchestra, and teaches music history. He has been the Coordinator for the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition since 2013 and is currently serving as the Program Chair for the Florida Flute Association's annual conventions until 2020.
As an active soloist, chamber musician, and adjudicator, Dr. Benson was named a First Prize Winner at the 2011 Alexander & Buono International Flute Competition at Carnegie Hall in New York City, New York. He was also the First Prize Winner at the Kentucky Flute Society's Concerto Competition in 2010. In addition to being a lecturer and performer, he has had the prestigious honor to serve on juries for international and national flute competitions & master classes. His students consistently win positions and top awards at national auditions and solo artist competitions. He is currently the Principal flutist in the Gadsden Symphony.
Dr. Benson is the leading scholar and expert on flute compositions by the contemporary Japanese-French composer Yuko Uѐbayashi, and his doctoral research serves as the only primary source about Uѐbayashi and her original flute compositions.
He completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Flute Performance from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, the Master of Music in Performance degree from Florida State University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Jacksonville State University. His teachers and mentors include: Eva Amsler, Dr. William Jerryl Davis, Victoria DeLano, and Bart Feller. He is a Muramatsu performing artist.
